• Safe working with sodium hypochlorite
In municipal water supply systems in the chlorination room, an employee manually prepares a sodium hypochlorite solution of appropriate concentration for water treatment (pouring from a larger 50-liter barrel into smaller containers). During these activities, a sharp smell of chlorine is noticeable in the room. How should such work be organized in accordance with health and safety regulations? should such work be performed by two people? Do I need a written permit for particularly hazardous work? What means of individual or collective protection should be used? What procedures should be developed? What is the role of the OSH service here? Answer: All the above-mentioned obligations should result from the occupational risk assessment. According to the ordinance on the health and safety service, it is the health and safety service that participates in the risk assessment. But in practice, the risk is estimated by OSH employees. the selection of personal protective equipment should result from measurements of sodium hypochlorite concentration in the overflow room. The same applies to the use of, inter alia, sensors. A detailed analysis of the problem is presented in the article.
