• Contact with hazardous waste - how to care for the safety of employees (1)
Among the hazardous waste, groups requiring special rules of conduct can be distinguished. These include: waste containing PCBs, asbestos waste, batteries and accumulators, medical and veterinary waste, fluorescent and energy-saving light bulbs, and infectious materials. A seemingly harmless light bulb or used batteries in the wrong way can seriously endanger people's lives. How to protect employees from such danger and who should watch over it?
  • Pharmaceutical industry - protection against threats (2)
I work in the pharmaceutical industry, where employees work with hazardous substances or mixtures. When working with substances / mixtures posing a threat to the amount of these substances are not large and the contact with them is relatively short and limited, eg only when pouring substances into mixers. Detailed trainings for hazardous substances and mixtures are carried out for employees. All are equipped with personal protective equipment (tailored to the hazard, eg forced air systems) or collective protection (local extracts). Is this approach an "exhaustive" health and safety approach to such work?
  • Dust measurements in sawmills and joinery (4)
Pollination of air is an inevitable occurrence associated with the mechanical treatment of wood. Dust particles can have different sizes, which largely determines its harmfulness. The largest, with a diameter of over 50 micrometers, settle in just a few minutes. Medium dust, 5-50 micrometers, stay in the air for several hours, while the smallest - with a diameter below 5 micrometres - even for a few days. The risk assessment must take into account dust levels ... the more so since the value of NDS for wood dust has changed since August 21.
